Our History

  • 1944

    1944 - 

    October 17, 1944, Raynor Manufacturing Company was born in a small factory in Quincy, Illinois, founded by its two owners, Bill Norberg and Ray Neisewander. Norberg’s specialty was steel fabrication, while Neisewander’s expertise was woodworking. In 1946, the company moved to its present location in Dixon, Illinois. By the end of the decade, the company had more than 150 employees and had doubled the size of its original Dixon building.

  • 1950

    1950 - 

    Raynor continued its emphasis on quality and innovation. Ray Neisewander, now the company’s sole owner, pushed for close, responsive relationships with the growing list of Raynor dealers around the country and started the factory and dealer network, along with annual sales conferences in 1951. The field sales staff also grew and stepped up efforts to keep in contact with Raynor dealers who, by 1954, could be found in 35 states.

  • 1960

    1960 - 

    Raynor solidified its commitment to distributors and increased efforts to reach architects and homeowners with its message of quality and dependability. Annual sales were double that of 10 years earlier. Raynor developed the Raylon fiberglass garage door, built with an aluminum frame – it was lightweight, translucent, maintenance-free, and appealing to consumers of that era. The Raynor truck fleet, the brainchild of Ray Neisewander, Jr., was started. Raynor-owned trucks and Raynor drivers dramatically reduced shipping damage and provided dependable, regularly scheduled shipments to Raynor dealers, just as they continue to do today.

  • 1970

    1970 - 

    Raynor dealers could be found in 48 states. Steel doors, offering strength, durability, and low maintenance, began to increase in popularity. Although the residential market was slow to accept the steel door, the commercial market quickly embraced the product. Making its first appearance was the S-Series of commercial steel doors, Steeliner, the first Raynor residential steel door, and the first Raynor commercial operator.

  • 1980

    1980 - 

    Raynor raised the bar with several firsts that forever changed the garage door industry. In 1980, the success of the Decade steel residential garage door had competitors scrambling to produce a look-alike door. Our 3” thick TriCore created a whole new breed of commercial insulated doors. In 1982, Raynor announced the industry’s first 10-year residential door section warranty. The famous “For As Long As You Own Your Home” warranty was introduced in 1988. Raynor’s workforce in Dixon almost doubled as three manufacturing plants were built and the product line expanded to include residential openers and rolling steel doors.

  • 1990

    1990 - 

    The 1990s brought new horizons to Raynor Garage Doors, as it set its sights on overseas markets. By 1995, dealers could be found in more than 30 countries. An improving global economy created an expanding international market for higher quality products. As a result, Raynor became the leading exporter of U.S.-made garage door products. Experience in the international market also brought new ideas to Raynor, such as the EnduraCote system – black powder coated springs and white hardware – that was another industry first. 1999 Raynor acquired Richards-Wilcox.

  • 2000

    2000 - 

    The new millennium brought with it significant additions to Raynor’s growing product offerings. In 2000, Raynor introduced a line of Hurricane Ready residential doors. Quick to follow was the launch of the Innovations Series, foam in place residential garage door product line in 2001.

  • 2002

    2002 - 

    As a full-line garage door manufacturer, Raynor Garage Doors launched its first custom wood garage doors featuring the American Rivers door in 2003 and the River Pointe model in 2006. In 2009, Raynor pioneered a radical change to the way our dealers processed orders with the introduction of WebConnect. This innovative tool took advantage of technology to allow our dealers to generate or change quotes, display and print shop drawings, and place orders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

  • 2010

    2010 - 

    Raynor added residential door openers and commercial door operators to our product line. In 2012, Raynor revolutionized the ability for consumers to customize the color of their garage door with the introduction of the OptiFinish program. With OptiFinish, consumers have the unprecedented ability to choose one of 1,800 colors for their garage door, giving them the freedom to customize their door to match the look of their home.

  • 2013

    2013 - 

    During the technology craze of the 2000s, in March 2013, Raynor Garage Doors launched the Raynor iPad app. In July 2013, the Raynor Android app was developed, providing Android users all the same capabilities. The app was designed to put all of Raynor’s marketing materials at our dealers’ fingertips. Dealers are able to view product literature, videos, access WebConnect, visualize the look of doors with Design-a-Door, and view product slideshows – all with the touch of a button.

  • 2016
    Aspen Series garage door product literature

    2016 - 

    2016 was a big year for change with the introduction of Raynor’s Aspen Series garage doors including the AP200LV LuxeVue with extra-large, deluxe windows for a high-end look. Residential openers with WiFi were now available. Mid-2016 also brought an end to the Raynor Innovations Series, Affina®, Centura®, and Relante®. The new Raynor Engineering Assistant app was launched.

  • 2017

    2017 - 

    Raynor Garage Doors solved an industry-wide problem with the launch of its TruBalance Drum System technology, which provides 87 percent better balance than the industry standard for doors built with a heavy weighted, glazed top section.

  • 2019
    ColorWave™ Optional Post Paint Process literature

    2019 - 

    For an unexpected start to the year, Raynor tackled product delivery challenges along with the rest of the Midwest and areas hit hard in January by the polar vortex and extreme deep freeze. 2019 marked the end of Raynor’s OptiFinish post paint solution and the introduction of its next-generation ColorWave post paint system.  Raynor teamed up with Eden Coast to offer homeowners a wood door with high-end details, and the new Country Manor door made its debut.

    2020 - 

    Since 1944, Raynor Garage Doors has been an industry leader as a family-owned garage door manufacturer. Today we have more than 800 distributors in the United States, 190 in Canada, and 60 distributors in 50 countries on 5 continents. With 75 years of design, engineering and production expertise, no other garage door manufacturer can match our consistent product performance. Not bad for 75 years!
